Reading for editing presupposes using some specific skills to bring a piece of writing to a publishable standard. It involves consideration of subject matter (content), the form (vocabulary, grammar, cohesion, mechanics), and the audience; and the organization of all into a unified piece of writing. To be able to edit successfully, therefore, the following skills should be learnt: (a) perceptive reading for content, organization, form, and mechanics; (b) referencing; (c) identifying and categorizing of specification; (d) proof—reading using symbols.
