Planning a Reading Programme for the Junior Secondary School In Nigeria: an Approach through Literary Texts

Introduction
literature rarely forms part of the language programme of the upper primary school in Nigeria. Occasionally, rhymes, short stories and simple poems are included in the school language course book. But these are more often than not, used to reinforce grammar and test reading-comprehension. At the junior secondary level, the use of literature in
developing proficiency in reading is becoming increasingly desirable. Literature should serve as the ground for not only improving reading skills but also for utilizing these skills to encourage pleasurable reading and, more importantly, to expose pupils to varied experiences of literary language. The more pupils read, the better readers they become.
