The aim of secondary school education in Nigeria is the preparation of students for meaningful living within the society as well as preparation towards higher education This means that the curriculum at that level is relevant to the needs of the students such that self—reliant citizens are trained, There is no doubt the fact that communication needs rank high among the societal needs of Nigerians. English language although not our mother tongue. is the vehicle through which the curriculum at every stage of our education is propagated. This means that it has to be properly designed to function as a subject to be learned and also as a medium of
instruction. This study looks at the current English language curriculum with the view to pointing out its area of strength and weakness and how it could be reshaped to enhance acquisition of life-long literacy.
