Sex—Role Presentation in Nigerian Elementary School Readers

Elementary school readers do not only inform but teach in various ways. In subtle, often unconscious ways, the tone and development of the content and illustrations foster in the learner positive or negative attitudes about self, race, religion, sex, ethnic and social groups.- This paper, therefore, looks at previous research on sex rol‘e stereotyping in selected Nigerian elementary school readers is presented. This is followed by a discussion of ways in which such stereotyping is likely to influence the reader.
