This study discusses the work that is currently being conducted at the Model Teaching Centre (MTC) at the University of Jos. The mentally retarded at the MTC are taught to read using the Language Experience Approach (LEA). This is done in both mother tongues(Hausa) L1 and English L2. The use of’ L1 & L2 are basically due to the nature of the children who are multi—lingual in the centre. The results have shown tremendous improvement in the children ‘s ability to recognise important words within and around their environment.
