In spite of the fact that the study of English always requires reading (Cannington, 197625), many Nigerian students learning English hardly do any serious and systematic reading, and lack the techniques of this important language skill Stressing the importance of reading in our students‘ efforts to learn English, this article discusses the types, purposes and rates of reading, as well as reading efficiency, bad reading habits and how to eradicate them in order to improve the learner’s reading efficiency and enhance their chances of quickly mastering this all—important second language.
