ABSTRACT
Nigerians are among the nations of the World generally rated of low literacy level The simple dictionary meaning of literacy is “ability to read and write”. This paper explains that literacy can be in one ’s mother tongue or second language L3. It shows to what extent the Nigerian Education Research and Development Council has provided the tools necessary for publishing in about thirty-five (35) Nigerian languages. It presents a bird ’s-eye-view of the efforts of publishers in the Nigerian Languages. The paper ends with advantages to be gained if more books are published in the Nigerian Languages.
